Nissan . How to Replace Door Weather Stripping in a 1998 Dodge NeonWeather stripping on a car door protects the interior from rain and wind. This is true regardless of what model you drive. Over time, weather stripping dries and cracks. Rot may set in, further deteriorating the rubber. Driving a 1998 Dodge Neon with worn weather stripping can cause water damage to the carpet, upholstery and reduce the effectiveness of the air-conditioning unit. Fortunately, replacing the weather stripping can be done with little cost or time. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Screwdriver Medium-grit sandpaper Utility knife New razor blade Paper towels Adhesive Putty knife Replacement weather stripping Step by Step : 1 Check the strip and remove any items used to secure it with a screwdriver. Most stripping attaches with adhesive, however, some models have screws or clips holding the stripping in place. 2 Insert your fingers under a loose area of the old stripping. Pull the stripping away from the car. Remove as much stripping as possible. 3 Scrape off any remaining rubber with a utility knife. Install a new blade in the holder before beginning. Start at the top of the door and work downward. Remove any stubborn pieces with the blade. 4 Sand the area that held the old stripping. Use medium-grit sandpaper and cover the entire area that held weather stripping. Only sand the edge of the frame; do not sand any of the exterior of the car. This will scratch the finish. Wipe the sanded region off with a wet paper towel to remove the dust. 5 Apply a thick line of adhesive along the door frame in the same location that held the old stripping. Use a putty knife to spread the adhesive out and provide full coverage. Follow the instructions on the product for proper application. 6 Allow the adhesive to sit at least five minutes before applying the new weather stripping. Check the tube for the exact time to allow the adhesive to bond to the frame. 7 Place weather stripping along the line of adhesive. Start in one corner and systematically cover the line, pressing the rubber into the glue as you go. Hold each section in place for a few seconds before continuing. 8 Close the door and allow the adhesive time to dry. Follow the instructions provided with the product for drying times. Tips & Warnings Do one door at a time. This will allow you a reference if you have a problem.
Nissan . How to Replace the Door Hinge Pins for a 1994 Mercury CougarWhen the door becomes loose or starts to sag on a 1994 Mercury Cougar, the door's brass bushings are to blame; the door must be lifted in order to match the door latch with the striker. The door hinge repair kit comes with two door pins and four brass bushings per door. The hinges can be replaced by the average DIY mechanic, although the task is easier done with the help of an assistant. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Floor jack Hammer Drift Flat-head screwdriver Step by Step : 1 Lower the window. Open the door all the way and place the floor jack under the middle of the door. Raise the floor jack just enough to begin to lift the door. 2 Hammer the door pins up and out of the door hinges. Use the drift, if necessary, to get more impact on the pins. 3 Support the door with one hand and move it away from the hinges just enough to extract the brass bushings. Use the screwdriver to remove the bushings. 4 Install the new bushings in place of the worn bushings, then ease the door hinges back over the frame hinges, making sure that the bushings stay in place. This is the hard part. Use the floor jack, as necessary, to level the door; watch that you do not scratch the paint on the door by allowing it to contact the corner of the fender. 5 Align the door-hinge holes. Insert the new door hinge pins through the holes and the bushings. Use the drift and hammer to tap the door hinges pins all the way down. *Part II: What Makes It Go?. hear this happening and feel the brake pedal pulsing when the system energizes. While the system is working, it's important to keep your foot pressed firmly on the pedal until the car stops. If the anti-lock system has a problem, an amber light on the dashboard goes on, and normal braking without anti-lock takes over. So if your amber anti-lock light illuminates, remember that you still have normal brakes. Just pump them and steer in the proper direction as though you'd never head of ABS. And be sure to get the ABS fixed as soon as possible! What ABS doesn't do ABS cannot prevent all skids, nor does it always stop your car in a shorter distance. Although ABS does help you maintain steering, your vehicle may not turn as quickly on a slippery road as it would on dry pavement. A combi nation of excessive speed, sharp turns, and slamming on the brakes can still throw an ABS-equipped vehicle into a skid. On roads covered with loose gravel or freshly fallen snow, the locked wheels of a vehicle without ABS can 450

Therefore, it's important to keep a safe distance between your vehi cle and the one in front of you, and to try to maintain a constant speed rather than jamming on the brakes at the last minute. toitinq With ABS Do not pump your brake pedal if your vehicle has anti-lock brakes. Instead, use firm pressure on the brake pedal, keep steering, and let the microprocessor do the work for you. If your car has anti-lock brakes, it's a good idea to know what they feel like when they are operating normally. Find an empty parking lot on a rainy or snowy day and slam on the brakes, noticing how your vehicle responds. Keep your foot firmly on the pedal and get a feel for steering while they are operating. Then you'll know what to expect in a panicky situation. Chapter 18 shows you how to check your anti-lock braking system; a professional must do adjustments and repairs. Chapter 11 Nissan . Dodge Charger. * Steering and Suspension Systems Smooth the Way In This Chapter $*• Understanding how the steering system works • Looking at the various types of suspension systems .xcept for the steering wheel, you probably consider the steering and suspension systems located under your vehicle to be unknown territory, and, up until now, you've probably been content to leave it that way. But these systems are the unsung heroes that smooth out the driving process and keep you headed exactly where you want to go. This chapter can help you get a good idea of what type of steering and suspension your vehicle possesses so that you can deal intelligently with a technician if something goes wrong. And you can lengthen your vehicle's life significantly by using the instructions in Chapter 16 to lubricate the parts of those systems that require it. The Steering System The steering system consists of a series of linkages and gears that link the driver to the wheels. Two types of steering systems are in use today: rack-and-pinion and parallelogram. The older parallelogram linkage system is still found on some cars and trucks. The parallelogram includes a frame-mounted steering gearbox, pitman arm, relay rod, idler arm, and inner and outer tie rod-ends. The parallelogram system has the most grease fittings. The rack-and-pinion system eliminates the pitman arm, relay rod, and idler arm. Nissan . How does a rescue ram work?

On some vehicles, the grease can be replenished; others have sealed ends; and some have an internal rubber bushing that requires no grease at all. As the two parts of the linkage move against each other, the grease in these tie-rod ends cushions them. This keeps them moving freely and prevents friction that would wear them away. Batt joints Ball joints are important parts of the steering systems on all vehicles. A ball joint is a ball socket assembly that attaches the steering knuckle to the suspension system.
